Team ALPACA presents at fall conferences

The PIs were present at the Northeast Conference on Andean & Amazonian Archaeology & Ethnohistory (NCAAAE) hosted by Dr. Stephanie Bautista at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY.

Dr. Velasco presented on his work at the tombs of Yuraq Qaqa in Coporaque.

Dr. Langlie presented on the initial results of our terrace survey from July and August.

Southern Andean Saturday Symposium – Charlotte, NC

Just a week later, Team ALPACA represented at the Southern Andean Saturday Symposium (SASS), hosted by Dr. Sara Juengst and Dr. Dennis Ogburn at University of North Carolina, Charlotte. Originally, Dr. Scotti Norman was going to host at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina, but the community is still actively recovering from the devastating floods from hurricane Helene.

Daniela Fuenmayor (University of Miami) presented the results of her textile analysis of materials excavated from the tombs of Yuraq Qaqa. She presented the puzzling frequency of s(2s) technique in the materials, which generated a (surprising?) amount of discussion.

Dr. Lauren Kohut presented on some new defensive sites identified during our 2024 field season and how they help us to understand warfare during this period in Achoma.
